Females
Our cowherd is heavily influenced by Montana genetics. Sires of our cows are: Vermilion
Right Time 6483 and other Leachmam Right Time sons, GDAR Traveler 71, VDAR New Trend 156,
SAF Fame, Homestead Blockbuster 409, Connealy Dateline and sons, HARB Cincha 829, BV New
Design 878, N Bar Emulation EXT and other breed leaders. They are bred to survive on the
range.
In our environment the ideal cow weighs 1150 to 1250 pounds and produces a calf that is
50% of her body weight. We run our registered cows along with our commercial cows. They are
pastured from May 15 to late October on native range. After weaning, cows are run on corn
stalks all winter. Protein lick tubs are provided when the "good" is gone from the corn
stalks. Supplemental hay is fed when the crop residue is cleaned up. This is usually around
January 1st depending on the weather. They calve out in the open and usually stay in the
fields until next year's grass.
Antelope Valley Ranches is using embryo transfer from our very best cows and mated to the
breed's leading sires to produce replacement heifers for our breeding program and herd bull
prospects for our bull customers. Our selection of donor cows is based on carcass pedigrees
and/or Pathfinder status.
